Stronger With Every Rep: Roshni Devi Sangwan’s Inspiring Comeback at 68
At a time when most women her age are advised to slow down and take rest, Roshni Devi Sangwan chose to redefine aging on her own terms. At 68, clad in traditional attire and armed with unmatched willpower, she walked into a gym, a space often dominated by youth and began a transformation that would inspire a nation.
The Diagnosis That Sparked a Revolution
Her journey began with pain. Diagnosed with knee arthritis, she was advised by doctors to avoid physical strain, stairs, and any activity that might worsen her condition. “Mata ji, ab umar ho gayi hai, aaram kariyega,” they told her gently. But Roshni wasn’t ready to surrender. Her son saw a different future for her. His unshakable belief in her potential sparked the first turning point he quit his own business to train her full-time.
In June 2023, she entered a gym for the very first time in her life.
From Reluctance to Revolution
At first, she hesitated. There were no role models around her no elderly women she could look up to who had chosen strength training this late in life. The stares, the comments, the doubts were overwhelming. “Budhiya is umar mey kya shadi karni hai?” people jeered. “Satsang karo, gym kyun ja rahi ho?”
But her son stood by her. He reminded her of the pain she once felt simply standing, and the possibilities that awaited if she committed. Slowly, with patience and perseverance, the gym became her sacred space. The woman who had once struggled to walk now lifts weights heavier than people half her age.
Today, Roshni is fondly known as #WeightlifterMummy, not just in her community, but across the internet.
When Passion Finds Purpose
Initially skeptical, Roshni slowly began to enjoy her workouts. With consistency, her body grew stronger, and her belief in herself deepened. “I used to think what am I doing here, at this age? But my son never let me quit,” she recalls. Over time, she began performing workouts with the same intensity as young athletes. The joint pain disappeared, replaced by energy and joy. Now, she dreams of representing India at an international powerlifting platform.
Breaking Stereotypes, One Deadlift at a Time
Every step of Roshni’s journey challenged societal norms. A 68-year-old woman in a salwar kameez, lifting weights and defying age, was unheard of. And yet, with each squat, each deadlift, she dismantled the limiting beliefs of what aging looks like for women. “People used to say I was crazy, but my son reminded me only I know my pain. Only I can fight through it.”
Her belief is unshakable: age is just a number, and strength lives in the mind first.
The Man Behind the Movement
Behind Roshni’s rise is her son her coach, motivator, and anchor. “Paise to kama lenge, maa ek hi hoti hai,” he told her when she worried about his decision to leave his career for her. That one sentence became the foundation of her willpower. “My son is my biggest blessing,” she says proudly. “When I thought my life was over, he gave me a new one.”
Becoming India’s Strongest Dadi
With sheer discipline and hard work, Roshni can now do a 120 kg leg press, 60 kg squats, and 103 kg trap bar deadlifts. Her talent hasn’t gone unnoticed. She’s been invited to shows like Super Star Singer 3 on Sony TV, Battleground on MX Player, and Laughter Chef on Colors TV. She also received an official invitation to compete at the World Strength Games 2026 in the USA possibly making her the first Indian grandmother to represent the country at such a global fitness platform.
Leadership Through Legacy
For Roshni, leadership isn’t about being at the front it’s about lifting others up. She believes in building leaders, not followers. “If you keep working hard and stay true to your goals, people will automatically follow,” she says. “Real leadership is empowering others to believe in themselves.”
Her Message to the World
“Never give up life always gives you another chance,” Roshni says with conviction. “If one path is closed, trust that another will open. You just have to believe in yourself. And remember: age is just a number.”
In an age where quick fixes dominate, Roshni Devi Sangwan is a testament to patience, purpose, and power. She’s not just lifting weights she’s lifting spirits, rewriting narratives, and reminding us all that it’s never too late to become your strongest self.
